Bettye Slaughter

Services for Bettye Brooks Slaughter, 84, Dallas, were held Monday, June 23, at First United Methodist Church, Quinlan, with Rev. Wally Williams officiating.


Burial was in Lakeside Memorial Park, Quinlan, under direction of Quinlan Funeral Home.


Mrs. Slaughter died June 20, 2008, in Dallas.


She was born February 14, 1924 in Russellville, Ark., to Brooks A. “Happy and Tessie D. Gunter Warren. She married William H. “Bill” Slaughter in 1942.  She attended Texas A&M University and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Quinlan. She wrote “Here’s Fishin’” for The Tawakoni News for more than 20 years, retiring in 2003.


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 47 years, William H. “Bill” Slaughter, in 1989; sister, Wanda Gifford; and daughter, Tarina Jill Sell, in 1985.


Survivors include children, William H. Slaughter II, and wife Diane, West Tawakoni, Becky Lynn Neilson, University Park, and Deborah Warren Bridwell and Charlie Watts, Lone Oak; grandchildren, Stephen Neilson Jr., Jana Shakespeare, Penelope “Penny” Fitzgerald, Aaron Slaughter, and wife Jessica, Michael Neilson, and wife Megan, Brian Sell, and wife Lucy, Andrea Kendall, and husband Chris, Matthew Sell, Peter Neilson, Blaire, and Adam Slaughter; and great-grandchildren, Colby Morrison, Shelby Fitzgerald, Courtney Morrison, Colton Slaughter, Kayla Kendall, Tristynn Neilson, Preston Neilson, Ty Shakespeare, Brooke Kendall, Kosta Slaughter, Joey Montano, Aniston Neilson, Jennna Kendall, Alexis Slaughter, Lily Sell and Cruz Neilson.


Grandsons served as pallbearers.


Great-grandsons served as honorary pallbearers.


Memorials may be made to the organ or building fund at First United Methodist Church, Quinlan.
