Services for Rose Matlene Barton Shirley, 86, formerly of Van, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Hilliard Funeral Home Chapel, Van, with Rev. Berry Hosford officiating.

Burial was in Sand Flat Cemetery.

Mrs. Shirley died July 8, 2008 in Glen Rose.

She was born June 7, 1922 in Van to Robert Madison and Jimmie Allen Barton. She was a resident of Dallas since the early 1940s, formerly living in Van. She worked for North American Defense during World War II, building aircraft. She married George Shirley in 1948. She was of Baptist faith and attended Wynnewood Baptist Church in Dallas in earlier years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Shirley, in 1998; and brother, J.B. Barton, in 2008.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, George David and Sharon Shirley, Terrell; daughters, Diann Hosford, Glen Rose, and Denise Hannon, St. Augustine, Fla.; brother, Forest Barton, Grand Saline; sister, Ann Duyka, Oakland; grandchildren, David Shirley, Mikel Shirley, Tessa Manke, Matt Hosford, Crystal Shirley, Christopher Scott, Jared Shirley, Jacob Hosford, Justin Shirley and Bevin Hosford; and great-grandchildren, Taylor Hosford, Crystaline Shirley, Courtney Shirley, Breann Shirley, Noah Shirley and Tiffany Shirley.

Pallbearers included Matt Hosford, Jacob Hosford, David Shirley, Mikel Shirley, Jared Shirley, Justin Shirley and Christopher Scott.
