Services for Mary Evans, 90, Wills Point, were held at 11 a.m., October 24, at First Baptist Church in Wills Point with Rev. Fred Morrow, Rev. Don Tisdale and Rev. Faulk Landrum officiating.
Burial was at White Rose Cemetery under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point.
Mrs. Evans passed away October 22, 2009, in Quitman.
She was born April 29, 1919, in Quitman, to William Washington and Cynthia Caroline Sarver Gilbreath. She grew up in the Forest Hill Community near Quitman and graduated from Quitman High School in 1936. She met Leland "Chief" Ezell while he was working in Quitman for the electric co-op. They married August 19, 1939, prior to Leland serving in the U.S. Navy. She was able to travel with Leland to various places that he was stationed. She worked in retail from a very early age. She worked in ladies clothing for Neiman Marcus in Dallas for twenty six years. After Leland’s death, Mary married Rathel Evans and they had been married for over eighteen years at the time of his death. She was a member of Wills Point Chapter 366, Order of the Eastern Star, for more that fifty years. She served as associate Conductress, Conductress, Associate Matron, Worthy Matron, Ester and Electa. She received two appointments from Grand Chapter, Past Mother Advisor of Edgewood Assembly 353 and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Rainbow for Girls. Mary was a member of the Red Hat Club and was a very active member of First Baptist Church in Wills Point, having served in various places of service.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Leland "Chief" Ezell in 1981, and Rathel Evans in 2001, brothers, Roy Gilbreath and Sam Gilbreath and sister, Lila Glbreath King.
Survivors include her step-daughter, Carol Davis, California; brother, Willie Joe Gilbreath, Quitman; sisters, Dorothy McDade, Quitman and Wanda Calvert and husband, Dee, Quitman; several nieces, nephews and other relatives; and a host of friends.
