Cozart, Garrett Lead The Class Of 2008

Seniors Jessica Cozart and Lindsay Garrett have been named the top seniors at Canton High School for the class of 2008.

JESSICA COZART

Jessica Cozart is the 18-year-old daughter of Edward and Barbara Cozart, and will graduate with a 5.4738 grade point average.

She has attended Canton schools for 13 years.

While at CHS Cozart’s school activities include UIL spelling, 2004-2008; team captain UIL spelling, 2007/2008; UIL number sense, 2004-2008; UIL headlines, 2004-2006; UIL mathematics, 2006-2008; UIL one act play, 2004-2008; district wide planning committee, 2005/2006; Spanish Club, 2005-2007; PALS, 2006/2007; student council, 2006/2007; National Honor Society, 2006-2008; and NHS secretary, 2007/2008.

Cozart’s awards include National Merit Commended Scholar, 2007; Most Likely To Succeed, 2004-2008; Best Leader, 2007/2008; Faculty Awards: Pre-Ap geometry, 2004/2005; Pre-Ap biology, 2004/2005; communications applications, 2004/2005; Pre-Ap algebra, 2005-2006; Pre-Ap physics, 2006/2007; and theater productions, 2006/2007.

Other awards include UIL awards for number sense district champion 2005/2006; UIL number sense regional qualifier, 2005-2008; UIL one act play outstanding crew member 2004-2008; UIL mathematics district champion, 2007/2008; UIL mathematics regional qualifier, 2006-2008; UIL mathematics state qualifier, 2007/2008; and UIL spelling district champion 2004-2008.

Also, UIL spelling regional champion, 2005-2008; UIL spelling state qualifier, 2004-2008; UIL spelling state 5

th place medalist, 2005/2006; UIL spelling state 4th place medalist, 2007/2008; UIL spelling state team and individual champion, 2006/2007.

Cozart has been active in theater production, 2005-2008; named Speech and Drama Sophomore of the Year, 2005/2006, and Junior of the Year, 2006/2007.

She has been active in Girl Scouts, church activities, youth choir and assistant youth choir director.

Upon graduation she is planning to attend the University of Notre Dame next fall and plans to receive a bachelor of arts in mathematics and attend graduate school upon completion of her degree.

She has received a scholarship from Notre Dame in the amount of $27,000 for her first year of college.

LINDSAY GARRETT

Lindsay Garrett is the 18-year-old daughter of Martha Garrett and Warren Garrett, and will graduate with a 5.1547 grade point average.

She has attended Canton schools for 13 years.

While at CHS Garrett’s school activities include student council representative, 2006; student body secretary, 2007; Spanish Club member, 2005-2007; CHS political awareness club minority leader, 2006-2008; National Honor Society member, 2006-2008, NHS vice president, 2007/2008; UIL member, 2005-2008; FFA member, 2004-2008; FFA president, 2005-2008; Mineola FFA District president, 2007/2008; FFA Greenhand secretary, 2004.

Her academic awards include: UIL extemporaneous public speaking, 2005-2008; 2007 Extemporaneous Speaker of the Year; 2006-second district, regional qualifier, 2007-first district, fourth regionals, state qualifier; 2008-first district, first regionals, third state; current issues and events, 2008; 2008-second high individual, first place team, regional qualifier.

Also, National Forensics League national qualifier, 2007; FFA job interview event, 2005-2007; 2005-first place district and area, state qualifier; 2006-first place district and area, seventh in state; 2007-first place district and third area; prepared public speaking, 2005-2006; 2005-first place district, second area; 2006-first place district, second area; Creed speaking, 2004-2006; 2004-fourth place district; 2005-second district; 2006-third district, sixth area; Star Greenhand Award, 2005.

Also, Star Farmer Award (state) 2006; Star Lonestar Award (State) 2007; Extemporaneous Public Speaking two years; first place district, second area, state qualifier 2007; first district, third area 2008; Livestock Judging, 2005-2007; Diary Judging 2008; Horse Judging 2006-2007; Meats Judging two years; area high individual, second place team, state qualifier 2007; area second individual, third place team, state qualifier, 2008; Beef Heifers four years.

Also, Reserve Grand Champion Simbrah At HLSR 2007; Grand Champion Simbrah Heifer at SFT 2007; Placement Proficiency two year; first place district and area, third place state 2007; first place district, first place area, state qualifier 2008; Rotary Student of the Month 2007; Agricultural Award 2007.

Garrett has been an active member of 4-H having competed in numerous activities in communications record book 2006-state winning book; meats judging for three years, in 2006 high individual and team at district; and in 2007 high individual and team, district; third high individual at state.

Also, in 4-H she was a state qualifier in fashion design in 2006/2007; state qualifier in photography in 2006/2007; state qualifier in method demonstration 2004-2006, Beef Bowl State Qualifier 2004-2006; participated in county council four years, and received the Gold Star Award in 2006.

Garrett also currently serves as Van Zandt County Council president of the Texas Junior Simmental Simbrah Association and has been a member for 10 years.

She is also currently vice president of the State Board High Individual at State Futurity 2004, 2006, 2007, American Junior Simmental Simmbrah Association and has been a member for 10 years. High individual National Classic, 2006 American Junior Red Angus Association, member 2004-2008; member of Driven Life Church; and is a Who’s Who Among American High School Students, 2004-2008.

Upon graduation Garrett plans on attending Texas A&M University to obtain a degree in Agriculture Communications.

Garrett said it is her hope to combine her "interest in media and my passion for the agricultural industry, particularly the beef industry. I would like to promote the safe and efficient means the agricultural industry uses to produce their products."

Garrett received the following scholarships: $1,000 Texas Junior Simmental/Simbrah Association; $4,000 Fort Worth Beef Heifer Challenge Scholarship, $3,000 Fort Worth Calf Scramble Scholarship, $500 Texas A&M University Women’s Club Scholarship, $2,500 Texas A&M University Incoming Freshmen Scholarship, $1,000 Texas A&M University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Scholarship, $1,500 San Angelo Stock Show Heifer Scholarship, $1,000 Fort Worth Heifer Sale Scholarship, $5,000 State Fair of Texas Scholarship, $1,000 National FFA Scholarship, and $1,000 Van Zandt County 4-H Paul Orf Memorial Scholarship.

Also, $500 Bobbi Rogers Memorial Scholarship, $1,000 Canton FFA Alumni Scholarship, $500 Texas Cattlewomen’s Scholarship, $750 American Simmental Association Scholarship, $250 Van Zandt County Junior Livestock Scholarship, $250 Kids Inc. 4-H Scholarship, and she is a State 4-H Scholar.
