Mother/Daughter Team Nabbed For Stealing

Julie Vaughan, Editor

Police say a mother/daughter team tried to take off with more than $500 worth of merchandise from Walmart on Saturday night, but they were stopped by an employee who insisted they give the items back. The pair wouldn’t cooperate and instead decided to run down the store employee before getting caught by police.

Kendra Sue Taylor, 37, and Sara Elizabeth Veach, 19, both of Van, were arrested by Canton Police Officer Jeff Arnold on multiple charges ranging from theft to aggravated assault.

According to Arnold’s report, a Walmart employee was made aware that two customers were attempting to shoplift, so the employee followed the women out to their truck and asked for their receipt which they refused to provide.

"They had filled up the Walmart recycle bags that you can buy in the store and bring in," Canton Police Chief Michael Echols explained. "They have evidently done this before."

"They began to load the stuff (in their vehicle) and the employee began to unload the merchandise," Arnold said.

The suspects got into the truck to leave, with Taylor getting in the driver’s seat.

The store employee, according to the report, went to the front of the truck to attempt to get the license plate number, and was struck by the vehicle.

"The mother/daughter traded places and the young girl hit her (the employee) again," the report stated.

Taylor then exited the truck and started walking toward State Highway 243 while Veach remained in the truck.

"They were arrested on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges because they used the vehicle as a weapon," Echols explained.

Taylor was arrested for theft $500/$1,500, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (Felony 2), failure to identify-fugitive from justice, and two counts of issuance of bad checks.

Veach was arrested for theft $500/$1,500 and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (Felony 2).

At press time the condition of the Walmart employee was not known.
