Homecoming Set For Friday

The Canton High School varsity football game against Eustace is set for 7:30 p.m. at Birdwell Stadium, with homecoming festivities beginning at 7 p.m. prior to kickoff.

CHS has chosen eight ladies to represent them as the 2009 Homecoming Court.

Representing the freshmen class as Duchess is Victoria Smith. She is the daughter of Troy and Diana Smith.

Victoria will be escorted on Friday by her father Troy Smith.

Her accomplishments include Spanish Club, basketball for one year, volunteer for the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office Employees Association for two years, and a member of First Baptist Church of Canton.

Representing the sophomore class as Duchess is Erika Erickson. She is the daughter of Robert and Nerissa Erickson.

Erika will be escorted Friday by her father Robert Erickson.

Her accomplishments include president of the freshmen class 2008/2009, member of the Spanish Club, Most Likely To Succeed 2008/2009, Student Council 2008-2010, Freshmen Class Duchess 2008/2009, Freshmen Top Scholar 2008/2009, Junior Varsity Cheerleader 2008/2009, Varsity Cheerleader 2009/2010, NCA All-American Cheerleader, and member of the UIL Calculator Team 2009/2010.

Also, member of the UIL Prose and Poetry Team 2009/2010, member of the CHS Chess Club 2008/2009, President of the Sophomore Class 2009/2010, member of the three-time state champion Mighty Eagle Band two years, Mighty Eagle Band State Marching bronze medalist 2008/2009, and UIL All Region Band 2008/2009.

Representing the junior class as Duchess is Macy Matthews. She is the daughter of Phillip and Wendy Matthews.

Macy will be escorted Friday by her father Phillip Matthews.

Her accomplishments include Spanish Club one year, volleyball one year, junior varsity cheerleader one year, varsity cheerleader one year, cheer co-captain two years, NCA All-American nominee two years, NCA All-American cheerleader 2009, and Newcomer of the Year 2008, Woman of Steel one year.

Also, Powerlifting three years, state qualifier two years, freshmen and sophomore Class favorite, Miss Junior Van Zandt County 2009, track one year, Fellowship of Christian Athletes two years, Student Council Treasurer one year, and yearbook staff one year.

Representing the senior class as Duchess is Katelyn Deibert. She is the daughter of Kevin and Stephanie Deibert.

Katelyn will be escorted Friday by her father Kevin Deibert.

Her accomplishments include member of Word of Victory Outreach Center, basketball two years, volleyball three years, Most Valuable Player 2006/2007, junior varsity co-captain 2006/2007, National Forensic League four years, UIL Academics four years, Newswriting two years, Editorial Writing two years, Feature Writing two years, Current Issues and Events four years, Extemporaneous Speaking one year, and fourth place district Informative Extemporaneous Speaking 2006/2007.

Also, Freshmen of the Year 2006/2007, Current Issues and Events first place team district; third place team - regionals – 2006/2007, Editorial Writing second place district; fifth place regionals 2008/2009, current issues and events third place district 2008/2009, Speech and Debate Club Secretary 2008/2009, National Honor Society two years, and National Honor Society secretary 2009/2010.

Also, Fellowship of Christian Athletes vice president 2008/2009, Student Council three years, Sophomore Class vice president 2007/2008, Junior Class Representative 2008/2009, Student Body President 2009/2010.

Representing the freshmen class as their candidate for queen is Margaret Rogers. She is the daughter of Craig Rogers.

Margaret will be escorted by her father Craig Rogers.

Her accomplishments include member of First Baptist Church in Canton, volunteer through 4H for Bobbi Rogers Scholarship Fund, member of the Mighty Eagle Band for four years, Mighty Eagle Band State Marching Champion – gold medalist – 2006/2007, Mighty Eagle Band Grand Champion at NSU 2007/2008, Mighty Eagle Band State Marching - bronze medalist – 2008/2009, varsity cheerleader 2009/2010, and NCA All-American Nominee 2009/2010.

Representing the sophomore class as their candidate for queen is Sydney Tarkington. She is the daughter of Michael Scamardo and Connie Harrill.

Sydney will be escorted by her stepfather Rex Harrill.

Her accomplishments include band one year, marching band state champions 2006, varsity cheerleader one year, basketball four years, varsity basketball two years, watergirl one year, yearbook staff one year, National Honor Society two years, Fellowship of Christian Athletes two years, member of Crossroads Church in Canton, youth praise band one year and Comanche Community Rehab three years.

Representing the junior class as their candidate for queen is Lesli Garrett. She is the daughter of Warren and Martha Garrett.

Lesli will be escorted by her father Warren Garrett.

Her accomplishments include Area VI FFA president 2009/2010, fifth place State FFA job interview 2008, seventh place State FFA Junior prepared public speaking 2007, Mineola District FFA president 2008/2009, State Qualifying FFA Senior prepared public speaking two years, Star Lonestar FFA Degree 2009, Grand Champion Simbrah Heifer Fort Worth Stock Show 2008, and Reserve Grand Champion Simmental Heifer State Fair of Texas 2006.

Also, State Qualifying FFA Ag Communications Proficiency 2009, National FFA voting Delegate two years, Chapter FFA president three years, High Point Chapter FFA member 2009, State Qualifying FFA Meats Judging two years, State Qualifying FFA Livestock Judging one year, and class officer four years.
