Edgewood ISD Burglarized

Donna Limberger, Staff Writer

Buildings at Edgewood Independent School District were broken into this past week. Edgewood ISD was one of four area school districts which had buildings burglarized.

The Rains, Kaufman and Alba-Golden school districts all had buildings burglarized as well.

At Edgewood’s intermediate, middle and high schools, file cabinets were found open and student records were lying everywhere.

"When we saw those student records lying everywhere, we felt like there were precautions that needed to be taken," said Edgewood ISD Superintendent Jack Shellnutt.

Shellnutt said that the district called the Social Security Administration and that all of the students’ Social Security numbers will be red flagged.

"The Social Security Administration has an investigation division for identity theft and that investigation said that it may be a year before things start showing up," said Shellnutt.

Shellnutt said that he and investigators looking into the crime thought that it was strange that not much money was taken.

"They didn’t seem to be after money so we don’t know what they were looking for. The Social Security Investigator said that these unused young children’s Social Security cards are high dollar commodities on the black market," said Shellnutt.

"I know some of the other districts are not doing this but we felt it would be better to be safe," said Shellnutt.

Shellnutt said that the district sent a letter home to parents on Tuesday afternoon informing them of the situation.

"The letter includes a website that parents can go to and check their child’s number for free. This can be done once per year. It is an official website," said Shellnutt.

Shellnutt said that the website is annualcreditcheck.com and that parents should wait a little while before checking.

"I urge parents to check this website but they should wait a while so that if numbers were compromised it would give activity time to show up," said Shellnutt.

Shellnutt said that the Edgewood Police Department is working on police reports for all of the students and those will be made available to parents as soon as they are ready.

"We want parents to have a report of the incident so that if something comes up, even years down the road, they will paperwork on the incident," said Shellnutt.
