Summer Reading Program Underway At Van Library

Donna Limberger, Staff Writer

The Summer Reading Program is underway at the Van Community Library and Wednesday, June 4 was the first ever activity day.

The Van Volunteer Fire Department presented a program on fire safety and after the presentation, the children were given an opportunity to take a closer look at the fire trucks.

"The program is aimed at children in grades K-6 and parents are encouraged to visit the library any weekday with their children and let them sign up for the program," said Martha Myers of the Van Community Library.

Myers said that many of the books available to children are eligible for Van ISD’s Accelerated Reader Program.

"The list of books the kids read can be taken to their school librarian in September to see if a test is available for those particular titles," said Myers.

Activity Day for the program is scheduled for every Wednesday at 10 a.m. through July 23 with the exception of Monday, June 16 when two clowns from the Ringling Bros. Circus will be at the library to entertain the readers at 11:00 a.m.

"Children of all ages are invited to join in the fun on that day," said Myers.

Myers said that other scheduled events include presentations by Caldwell Zoo, a scientist, CLAWS and the Van narcotics officer and dog.

"Storytime for preschoolers continues every Thursday at 10 a.m. with stories, crafts, songs and snacks," said Myers.

The library is inside the Van Community Center at 310 Chestnut St. near the soccer fields. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until noon and it is also open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.

"The Friends of the Library hosted a gigantic garage sale for the library and it was a great success. We want to thank all the volunteers who worked. We would also like to say thanks to all who donated items and bought the bargains," said Myers.
