Large Crowd Enjoys Funday On Sunday At Lester Park

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The second annual "Funday on Sunday" attracted approximately 1,000 participants, according to the Wills Point police department.

The event, held at Lester Park, is an opportunity for kids and their families to meet emergency personnel and learn about safety. It is also a chance to just have fun at the park.

"We’re living in a time when it’s hard for families to go out and have fun," said police chief Scott Johnson. "This was free family entertainment, and we had a lot of young families with kids come out and have a good time."

Some of the entertainment included a pumpkin carving contest, a dog costume contest and fishing contest. There was also a bounce house, face painting and carnival games.

Kids met police and firemen as well as an air ambulance crew, and volunteers served 1200 hot dogs.

Winners of the fishing contest were Isaac Nino (Biggest Fish) Lane Ditto (Smallest Fish), and there was a tie between Jacob Horsman and Tiffany Nicole for the most fish. In a sudden-death tie-breaker, Nicole caught her eighth fish, with Horsman taking second with seven.

Fifty kids caught a total of 70 fish in a two-hour span. All fish were released back into the Lester Park pond.

Winners of the pumpkin carving contest were Caynan Walters (First Place) and Jayden Wheeler (Second Place). Kathryn Bell won the dog costume contest.

"Every bit of this was provided free, and we would never have been able to do that without the sponsors and individuals that volunteered," Johnson said, adding the Wills Point city employees also volunteered their time to help with the event.

Among the many sponsors that donated food, giveaways, cash or other items were:

24 Hour Mart; Poor Boys Bait and Tackle; The Body Shop: Rick Johns State Farm; Citizens National Bank; East Texas Council of Governments; Union Pacific Railroad; CLAW; Dairy Queen; Tommy’s Towing; Eddie Deen Catering; Site Sanitation; Van Zandt County Vet Center; Lake Tawakoni State Park; Walmart – Terrell.
