Eaglettes Hang On To Playoff Spot
The Canton Eaglettes were scheduled to meet Kaufman in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday night, after clinching the final spot on February 5.
The Canton girls were able to sneak into the post season despite a 47-38 loss to Bullard, due to a surprising loss by Van to Chapel Hill. A Van win would ahve forced a playoff between Canton and Van.
The Bullard contest started wll enough for the Eaglettes, as they took an early 13-5 lead. The Lady Panthers answered in the second quarter, though, outscoring Canton by a 16-5 margin.
Canton could not close the 21-18 hafltime deficit. The district champiopn Bullard team stretched the lead to 37-29 by the end of the third, before winning by nine.
Meagan Wilson led the scoring with 17. Courtney Smith and Cassie Williams each scored six, Kelsey Nixon, four; Kaitie Gummelt, three; and Scarlett Miller two.
Bullard posted a 10-0 district record, while Athens came in second, at 6-4. Canton earned the final spot with a 5-5 district mark. Brownsboro and Van both finished at 5-5, and Chapel Hill was 1-9.
Results of Tuesday’s playoff game against Kaufman at Trinity Valley was not available at press time. The winner will take on Liberty-Eyleau on Friday.
