Lady Eagles Fall To Grand Saline In Opener
The Canton Lady Eagles’ softball team suffered a season-opening loss to the Grand Saline Lady Indians, 9-5.
Both teams pushed runs across the plate in the first inning, but Grand Saline scored twice in the third, and held a 3-2 lead going into the fourth.
The Lady Indians added to the advantage with runs in the fourth and sixth innings, and led by a 5-2 margin going into the seventh. In the top half of the seventh, Grand Saline scored four more runs, giving themsleves a 9-2 lead.
Canton tried to mount a comeback, scoring three runs in the last at bat, but could get no closer.
Whitney Austin led the way at the plate for the Lady Eagles, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI’s.
Jessica Marshburn, Emily Sterling and Cindi Farrell were all 2-for-4 at the plate. Farrell had two RBI’s and scored once, while Marshburn scored twice and stole a base. Sterling also scored twice and hit a double. Shelby Largin finished the night hitting 2-for-3.
Both the varsity and junior varstiy will travel to Ferris tommorrow (Friday). Jv is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., and varsity at 7 p.m.-
