Eagles Hold Lead With Three Games To Go

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The Canton Eagles were clinging to a one-game edge over the Mineola Yellowjackets going into Tuesday’s game in Mineola. Prior to Tuesday’s games the Eagles led the district with a 6-1 record, Mineola was 5-2, Wills Point and Van were tied at 4-3.

A win over Mineola would just about lock up the district title for Canton, while a loss would set up a tie and possible championship game. Canton won the first meeting between the two teams, 2-0.

The Eagles have won five games in a row, including a 10-5 win over Wills Point on April 7, and a 16-2 win over Eustace Friday, avenging the only district loss for the team.

Jonathon Huddle got the win in Wills Point, giving up four runs on four hits in 4-2/3 innings. Colten Brewer came on in the fifth and held the Tigers to one run in the final 2-1/3.

Brewer led the offense as well, going 2-for- 4 with 3 RBIs. Ethan Vestal was 3-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs. Vestal’s triple drove in the first run with two outs in the first inning.

Canton scored two in the second, three in the fourth and four in the fifth to build a 10-0 lead. Wills Point scored four in the fifth.

Hosting Eustace on Friday, the Eagles got a complete game from Nick Garrison in a five-inning, run-rule game. Garrison held the Bulldogs to two runs on two hits.

The Eagles scored 10 runs on seven hits in the first inning. Canton totaled 16 runs on 17 hits. Vestal was 3-for-3 once again, adding a two-run homer in the first. Brewer was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, Jonathan Savis was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs; Lucas Sanford was 2-for-4 with a triple and one RBI; and B.J. Arthur was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

"The kids are playing really well," Eagles’ head coach Jeff Priest said. "Out hitting is starting to take off. We’re playing with confidence right now."
