Lady Eagle Softball Earns Playoff Spot

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The Canton Lady Eagle softball team notched a spot in the playoffs with an 8-6 win over Mineola. The team went into the final regular season game in Van on Tuesday with a 6-3 district mark, and a lock on third place behind Van and Wills Point. It will be the first trip to the playoffs for the Lady Eagles since 2005.

Canton opened the scoring in the second inning when Samantha Whittington reached second on a grounder to short and a throwing error. With two outs, Emily Sterling hit an RBI single to right. Mineola answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, and the score remained 2-1 until Canton rallied in the fifth.

Shelby Largin reached with one out, and Brittany Arnold hit a double, putting runners at second and third, Bri Chamberlain had a bunt single, and two runners scored on a throwing error that moved Chamberlain to second. Lexi Callan got a base hit to score Chamberlain, and later scored on a two-out base hit by Meagan Spears. Sterling followed with a single that scored two runs.

Mineola scored two runs in both the fifth and the sixth innings, but a hit by Arnold and an RBI by Chamberlain in the sixth added a run to keep the score out of reach.

Lauren Fedor got the win. The first round opponent was yet to be determined at press time.
