Eagles Fall To 6-2, Tied With Mineola

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

District title hopes for the Canton Eagles’ baseball team hit a bump with a 7-1 loss to Mineola. The loss tied the two teams at 6-2 with two games remaining. Canton was in Van on Tuesday for the first of those, and held a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, but final results were not available at press time.

Playing at Mineola, the Eagles’ couldn’t take advantage of the runners they had on base, stranding nine runners.

"We couldn’t produce runs when we needed it," said head coach Jeff Priest. "We didn’t come up with the big hit. We made some mental errors that cost a couple of runs, and gave them a couple as well.

"We’ve had good crisp practices since then, and should be ready for Van."

The Eagles drew eight walks against Mineola, and had five hits, including a 2-for-4 night for Jonathon Savis; a 2-for-3 night with an RBI for B.J. Arthur, and 1-for-3 with a double for Ethan Vestal.

The Eagles will finish the regular season at home on Friday against Kemp, and then face a possible tiebreaker against Mineola to determine the district champion.
