Edgewood Down Mineola

Gerald Wheelus, Sports Correspondent

The Edgewood Bulldogs improved their season record to 3-1 with a 29-20 win over the Mineola Yellowjackets on Friday night. The three Edgewood victories have all come at the expense of District 14-3A teams, making the Bulldogs 6-0 versus that district over the past two seasons.

A turnover on Edgewood’s first possession stalled a promising drive, but Levi Weaver got the ball back for the Bulldog offense.

On a third-and-three pass attempt by Mineola, Weaver tipped the pass to himself and returned the interception to the Yellowjacket 1-yard line. It took four tries from there, but Ethan Rutter found Wyatt McBride on fourth-and-goal from the 4 for the TD. The kick failed, but Edgewood held a 6-0 lead.

The teams traded possessions before Mineola would turn an offsides and an unsportsmanlike penalties into a first down at the Bulldog 30.

The Edgewood defense showed up once again in the form of Weaver, who stopped a Mineola ball carrier for a 10-yard loss. Kiin Tuma got into the act, causing a 5-yard loss and Weaver sacked the Yellowjacket quarterback for another 11-yard loss. The ball went over on downs at the Bulldog 46.

It would take three plays for the Bulldogs to score. Rutter hit Haltom, McBride and Rogers, with the latter scoring from 34 yards out. The pass on the try for two was caught by Colton Hinton, and Edgewood led 14-0.

Mineola answered with a 13-play, 60-yard drive, culminating in a Joe Drennon quarterback sneak for the TD. The kick was good, and the halftime score was 14-7.

On the first Yellowjacket possession of the second half, Tre Wright created a fumble that Tuma would fall on, giving Edgewood the ball at the Mineola 39.

Rutter was again three-of-three with a touchdown on the drive, this time the score coming from 4 yards out to Haltom. Mario Bustillos added the extra point, and the score was 21-7 with 9:44 in the third.

Another promising drive by Mineola was stuffed by the Bulldog defense, with the ball going over on downs at the Edgewood 29.

Haltom got the Bulldog possession started with a 21-yard gain. Rutter finished the drive with a 21-yard scoring strike to Hinton, and with 3:47 left in the third, Edgewood held a 27-7 lead.

After an exchange of punts, Mineola scored on an 18-yard pass from Drennon to Meakins, cutting the lead to 27-14 with 10:54 left in the game.

When the ensuing Bulldog drive stalled, Haltom’s punt pinned the Yellowjackets down at their own 4. On first down, Drennon was dropped by Wright and Tuma for a safety, giving the Bulldogs a 29-14 lead.

Mineola drive for a final touchdown before Edgewood was able to run out the clock with a 29-20 win.

Edgewood will travel to Blooming Grove to begin district play on Friday.
