Bulldogs Start District 2-0, Lady ‘Dogs 3-1
The Edgewood Bulldogs have jumped out to a 2-0 start in district play, defeating Blooming Grove and Scurry Rosser in the first week of the New Year. The varsity boys team dominated Blooming Grove from start to finish in its’ district-opener, finishing with a 91-35 win.
Edgewood jumped out to a 25-6 lead after the first quarter. Darrius Rogers led the charge, scoring 10 of his game-high 22 in the opening period. The ’Dogs held a 75-25 lead going into the fourth period, but called off the full court press in the last quarter.
Every player on the Edgewood roster registered on the scoresheet. Wyatt McBride and Dillon Parmer both scored 13, and Calvin King had 10. Josh Sharff scored eight, Gabe Milton and Colten Hinton both had six, Trey Brown and Kiin Tuma each added five and Austin Fleming scored three.
The Bulldogs won a much more competitive contest against Scurry Rosser, 56-42. The Wildcats outscored the ’Dogs 15-12 in the third quarter, closing to within 37-34 going into the fourth. Sharff’s six fourth quarter points, though, led a 19-8 surge for Edgewood in the quarter as the team pulled away for the win.
Rogers (17) and Parmer (14) combined for 31 and Sharff totaled nine. Calvin registered eight points, Fleming five, McBride two and Tuma one.
Lady Bulldogs
The varsity girls entered the New Year with a 9-10 record, and hosted Blooming Grove with a 2-0 district mark, having defeated Malakoff and Mildred. A 53-40 win over Blooming Grove gave the Lady ’Dogs a 3-0, start.
Edgewood held a 16-6 lead over the Lady Lions at the end of the first, and a 33-14 lead at the half. The team stretched that to a 20-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Lady ‘Dogs were lead by 14 from Chandler Short and 12 from Michaela Brown. Brandi Bell added 9 and S’Andra Govan scored eight, while Allie Orrick and Trisha McDaniel both scored 4. Skylar Hogan scored two.
The Lady ’Dogs did the work on defense with 27 steals that lead to easy lay ups early in the game and contributed to the big first half lead.
The undefeated district mark received a blemish when the Lady ’Dogs hosted Scurry Rosser on Tuesday. Edgewood held an 18-17 lead at the half, but only managed 10 second half points in a 34-28 loss.
Orrick was the leading scorer with six, Short followed with five, and McDaniel, Brown and Bell each scored four. Govan added three and Hogan two.
