Lady Vandals Finish Perfect Regular Season

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The Lady Vandals completed a perfect regular season by defeating the Canton Lady Eagles, 5-0, in the final game of the season. The Lady Vandals finished 26-0, including a 10-0 district mark.

Already bi-district champs, Van will face the third place team out of district 16-3A, the New Boston Lady Lions. The area-round, one-game playoff is scheduled for Friday, May 8, in Hallsville. First pitch is scheduled 7 p.m.

Prior to the Canton game, seniors Shelby Harris, Chasity Smith and Brittany Wood were honored for the outstanding careers they have had. All three have been named to All-State teams during their high school careers.

Harris tossed a complete-game shutout, improving her season record to 14-0. It was the 14th Lady Vandals shutout of the season. All three of the senior girls were 2-for-3 at the plate against Canton, as was Chelsea Smith. Jessica Marshburn was 2-for-4 and Kayla Chitty added another triple.

In the first of three warm-up games, the Lady Vandals defeated the No. 2 team in class 2A, the Woden Lady Eagles, 6-2.

Freshman Kim Hutson hit a solo homerun in the second inning to score the first Lady Vandals run. Sophomore Taylor Wilson and freshman Kim Mobly then hit back-to-back triples. The Lady Vandals scored three in the second and three in the third to get the win.

Van will host the Edgewood Lady Bulldogs on Friday at 6 p.m., and the district 12-3A champion Crandall Lady Pirates at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
