Vandals Host Tournament
The DQ Van Invitational Tournament featured two teams ranked in the top 20 meeting in the finals, while the Vandals advanced to the semifinals.
Kennedale (#16) and Crandall (#12) each met in the title game with Kennedale winning, 50-45.
Pleasant Grove, ranked No. 5, was also at the tournament, but with 11 varsity players still playing football, the team was 0-2.
Van opened play with a 59-45 win over Winnsboro, and advanced with wins over Carrolton Christian and Athens before meeting Crandall in the semifinals.
Playing Winnsboro on Thursday afternoon, Van had to overcome a slow start, and trailed 23-22 at the half. The Vandals used a 20-8 advantage in the third to take control of the game, and led 42-31 going into the fourth.
Jordan Schmid (17) Zack Ghormley (16) and Colby Rucker (14) combined for 47 of the Vandals points. Michael Roberts added six, Shane Hilton had four and Travis Hand, two.
The Vandals met Carrollton Christian in a Round 1A game, winning by a 66-32 margin. Carrollton received a bye previous to that.
The win moved the Vandals to the second round where they picked up a 45-37 win over Athens. That earned the Vandals the right to play the highly ranked Crandall Pirates, and Van suffered its first loss, 40-32.
