Lady Tigers Beat Lady Eagles, 5-0

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The Lady Tigers evened their district mark at 1-1 after a 5-0 win over the Canton Lady Eagles on Wednesday. Wills Point fell in the opener to Mineola, 7-4.

Shelby Perry got the win over Canton, pitching a one-hit shutout and striking out 12. The lone hit came from Canton’s first batter.

The game was 0-0 through two innings before Wills Point pushed across the first run in the top of the third. Shelby Cunningham led off with a single and reached second when the ball was misplayed. A Brooke Jones single drove Cunningham in.

Canton’s Lauren Fedor got out of a two-on no out bind in the top of the fifth by retiring three in a row, including turning a double play by catching a line drive and doubling a runner off first.

She would have no such luck in the sixth though, when the Lady Tigers rallied for three runs. Mariah Pemberton led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Savannah Foster. Taylor Parker hit a one-out single putting runners at the corners before Perry and Lacy Belk hit back-to-back RBI singles.

Cunningham placed a fly inside the line behind third to drive in the third run of the inning, and Wills Point led 4-0.

The Lady Eagles made another good defensive play in seventh. With a runner at second and no outs, shortstop Brittany Arnold fielded a grounder and got the out at first. First baseman Emily Sterling then gunned down the base runner trying to advance to third.

Foster salvaged the inning though, when her grounder down the left field line got all the way to the fence for an inside the park home run.

The two teams are now tied at 1-1 in the district race. Canton defeated Kemp 15-0 in their first district contest. Van defeated Eustace 16-0 in game one.
