Tiger Tennis Team Competes At State

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The Wills Point varsity tennis team competed at the state team tournament held in Waco on March 13-14. Rain delays caused a change of format from 19 matches to nine.

The Tigers fell to seven-time state champion Abilene Wylie in the first round, but exacted a small amount of revenge against Argyle in round two.

Argyle defeated Wills Point 10-9 at regionals, but the Tigers answered with a 6-3 win at state.

Winners for Wills Point were the boy’s doubles team of Zach Janicek and Terrin Robinson; the girl’s doubles team of Emily Drake and Lacey Hawkins, as well as Molly Timmons and Brittany Howell; and the mixed doubles team of Connor McPherson and Jodi Loftin.

Singles winners were Justin Marical and Heather Evans.

In the round two loss to Groesbeck, boys doubles team of Cody Fivecoat and Tyler Wicks got a win, as did Drake and Hawkins. In a 5-4 loss to Van the winners were Drake/Hawkins, McPherson/Loftin, Timmons/Howell and Jared Royman.

The Tigers fell in the next two rounds, including a 5-4 loss to Van, giving the team a 12th place finish in the state.

The individual tennis season begins with a tournament in Wills Point on March 26 for JV, and March 27 for the varsity.
