Tigers Win Three In A Row, Tied At Top
After a district-opening loss to Canton, the Wills Point Tigers have reeled off three wins in a row to move into a tie at the top of the standings. Wills Point has defeated Kemp, Van and Eustace to build a 3-1 district mark.
After a dominant win over Kemp to move to 1-1, the Tigers defeated Van, 9-3, and beat Eustace on Tuesday night, 7-5.
Colton Newton and William Kerwin combined to strike out six on the mound, and drive in five runs on a combined 5-of-5 night at the plate against the Vandals in a makeup game.
Newton got the start and helped his cause in the first inning by driving in a run with a double. After Van tied the game in the bottom of the first, Newton answered with a homerun to center for a 2-1 lead.
Van again tied the score in the bottom of the inning, but Wills Point widened the lead with a two-run fourth. Kiefer Davis led off with a double, and Newton singled, putting two on with two outs. Garrett Kinney sent a fly to left that was misplayed, scoring two runs.
Leading 4-2 in the fifth, Wills Point broke open the game with a four-run fifth. Back-to-back singles by Austin Teel and Davis set up a two-run single by McDonald. Jayce Oldacre reached on an error, and Kerwin, in for Newton, picked up two RBIs with a double, giving the Tigers an 8-2 lead. Kerwin drove in another run in the seventh with a single after McDonald’s second double of the night.
Marshall Head got the win in Eustace, with Cole Ramsey picking up the save. Newton again provided punch at the plate, sparking a five run fifth with a two-run homer over the right field fence.
The Bulldogs scored four in the bottom of the inning, but Ramsey shut them out the rest of the way. He was helped by a game-ending defensive gem in the bottom of the seventh.
With Bulldogs at first and second and one out, Davis made a diving stop at short stop and flipped to Clay Deen at second. Deen turned the double play to Newton at first who made a good dig on the throw.
The Tigers will host the 2-2 Mineola Yellowjackets tonight (Friday). A win will set up a big game against Canton (3-1) on Tuesday in Wills Point.
