Lady Tigers Win Bi-District Round

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The Lady Tigers are Bi-District Champs after an 8-1 win over the Community Braves on Tuesday night. The win also automatically advances Wills Point to the regional quarterfinal due to the quirky area round bye District 14-3A has enjoyed this season. There is not a District 15, which would have been the area opponent for Wills Point. Instead, the Lady Tigers are awaiting the winner of Princeton and Pittsburg.

Playing in Royse City after a long swine flu break, the Lady Tigers got a no-hitter from Shelby Perry and three runs scored by Shelby Cunningham in the win over Community.

Brooke Jones got the game-winning hit in the third inning. Taylor English walked, Cunningham singled, and Jones followed with a two-run single giving Wills Point a 2-0 lead.

Cunningham finished with a 3-for-3 night, Jones was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, and Taylor Parker was 2-for4 with an RBI. Wills Point added three runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Perry struck out seven, and was backed up by some timely defense. Ashley Spurlock was credited with saving a run when she tracked down a ball in left field and threw a strike to Savannah Foster, who in turn threw out the runner at third.

Foster also played stellar defense at the shortstop position, getting to several balls hit to the middle, including a diving catch of a line drive. Jones also made a diving catch in right field.

The most likely date for the next round is Tuesday, May 19, but no time or place has been set.
