Chapel Hill To Give Tigers

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The Wills Point Tigers will have their first live scrimmage on Saturday morning when the Chapel Hill Bulldogs come to town for what should be a tough early test for the Tigers.

The scrimmage will serve as a Texas High School Coaches Association, "Our Day To Shine," event. An admission price of $1 will benefit the THSCA’s Benevolence Fund. The fund is used to assist athletes and coaches with special needs or hardships.

After two weeks of workouts, coach Garvin and staff are ready to see where the team is.

"The first week went real well," Garvin said. "Offensively we’re further along than we anticipated. The kids have a little better grasp of what we’re trying to do."

The Tigers have a number of returning starters back on the both sides of the ball, but the defense, with new coordinator Tim Seder, have made some changes, and both lines have new faces.

"Defensively it’s a little slower, but the kids are picking it up," Garvin explained. "I wouldn’t say we’re behind but moving a little slower. The biggest thing is the terminology is a little different. Some of the things we’re doing with the down linemen and the linebackers is a little bit different than it was last year, and there’s some technique stuff they’re having to pick up that’s new to them.

"Just the combination of those two things has slowed it down a little bit, but after the first week, and after getting it all on, this week it’s starting to come together a lot better."

The offense has a lot of skill players that are familiar with the offense and comfortable with each other. The line is looking for three new starters, and adjusting to a more aggressive blocking scheme.

"I think our seven-on-seven work in the summer has helped us," Garvin said of the skill players. "A lot of people do different things in their seven-on-seven, but our kids just stuck with the things that we run. Doing that gave them extra work on the timing of route running and passing between the quarterback and the receivers and the backs.

"It’s definitely paid off, because you can they know where they need to be."

Following the Chapel Hill scrimmage, the Tigers will get another test against the top-ranked 2A team Daingerfield. That scrimmage will also be at home on Thursday, August 21.

The Chapel Hill scrimmage will begin with JV and freshmen at 9:30, and the varstiy taking the field at 10:30.
