Tigers Shoot For 4-0 Start On Homecoming Night

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The Wills Point Tigers will put their unbeaten record on the line tonight in a homecoming game against the Brownsboro Bears.

The Bears come to town with a 2-0 record, having defeated Kemp 36-21, and Frankston, 44-31. Brownsboro’s week three game against Longview Spring Hill was cancelled due to weather, and will not be made up.

Brownsboro graduated a lot of talent after the 2008 season, but still have enough size and speed to cause problems for opponents.

"They are a very good team offensively," said head coach Kevin Garvin. "It’s a pretty balanced attack, but they really want to run the ball with number 20 (Cameron Warren). He has both size and athleticism."

The bears use two quarterbacks. Zach Bailey (No. 10) will be used to throw, while Ryan Owens (No. 7) is a better rusher.

"Defensively, we’re going to have to stick with our assignments," Garvin said. "The (Brownsboro) line does a good of coming off the ball, but we’re playing well on defense."

Junior Brad Lento (No. 77) is the defensive anchor for the Bears.

"He is a strong physical kid," Garvin said of the nose guard. "He does a good job of controlling the line."

The Tigers have managed to capture early leads in the first three wins, and will try to do the same on homecoming night. The Wills Point offense has found ways to get junior running back Brandon Morris into the open field, whether by running or by pass.

Morris scored the first two touchdowns against Farmersville on quick passes.

"We’ve been able to spread the ball around," Garvin said of his offense. "Trent did a good job running against Farmersville, and getting the ball to different receivers. If teams load up on Morris, we have other kids to go to."
