Hunt County 4-H Clubs Prepare For Competition

Staff Writer

Hunt County 4-H clubs are getting ready for spring contests to see what the members have learned throughout the 4-H year.

This past week eight 4-H youths participated in the District IV Livestock Judging contest.

Hunt County was represented by a senior team, intermediate team and a senior individual.

This year’s senior team consisted of Jackie and Tracey Brent, daughters of Tracey and Tammy Brent of Campbell 4-H; Sadie Thomas, daughter of Lynny and Mickey Thomas of Quinlan 4-H; and Jessica Price, daughter of Toby and Mandy Lester.

The senior individual was Caryn McKinley, daughter of Jesse and Cathy McKinley of Cowhill 4-H.

The intermediate team compete included Susan Higginbotham, daughter of Tommy and Tammi Thompson of Campbell 4-H; Justin Mumphrey, son of Aaron and Crystal Mumphrey of Campbell 4-H; and Jessica Hoelscher, daughter of Jerry Hoelscher of Cowhill 4-H.

The Hunt County 4-H Senior team placed second at district and will be moving on to state competition on June 10 at College Station. This will be the first Hunt County 4-H livestock judging team to compete at state in five years.

The intermediate team also placed second at the District IV Livestock Judging Contest. The intermediate contest for Hunt County had two high point individuals in Justin Mumphrey and Susan Higginbotham.

In the senior team, Hunt County had three high-point individuals — Tracey Brent, Caryn McKinley and Sadie Thomas. Sadie was the third-place high-point individual.

Also, a few weeks ago, Hunt County 4-H member Caryn McKinley competed in the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo Queen competition. This year was the first year that she was able to compete in this contest. She was named Miss Congeniality for all of the help that she offered to all of the other competitors throughout the competition. She was teased by the rodeo clowns during her ride in the arena during the competition.

She was in a bronco riding incident and her headstall broke on her horse. She and her horse finished the ride flawlessly, until she had to back her horse up and that’s when she realized that the headstall was broken.
