Scoring Droughts Hurting Hornets

Terry Britt

Dry spells in scoring in a basketball game can be fatal. The Boles Hornets learned that lesson the hard way twice in the past week.

Last Friday against Fruitvale, the Hornets did not register a point until the 4:51 mark of the second quarter on the way to a 66-43 loss. Fruitvale had a 16-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and was up 20-0 before Boles found the net with a shot.

"We started 3-of-22 shooting in the first half and it was an uphill battle from then on," Boles head coach Gordon Jordan said.

Kailob Wallace finished with 29 points for Boles, 16 of which came in the fourth quarter.

Tuesday, the Hornets got out of the starting gate a little better but had trouble in the middle quarters and lost to North Hopkins, 47-38.

Wallace had 15 points for Boles and Michael Jordan hit double digits with 12.

"It was tied 11-11 and we went on a dry run again," Coach Jordan said. "Next thing I knew, it was 24-14…from the middle of the second quarter to about three minutes left in the third, we scored four points."

The Hornets deposited five 3-point baskets in the game, but did not fare well at the free-throw line, hitting just five of 12 attempts.

Boles, now 2-3 in District 18-A, will play Friday night at Yantis.

Jordan hopes his team can find consistency on offense as they try to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot.

"We can’t go on these continued slumps of scoring and be able to compete at any game," he said.
